For this first release of 2016, we are proud to present our very first EP on the imprint !
On ‘Reflection’ Mangabey really embrace and melts his multiples influences in order to create his very own sound, by blending melodies and chords specific to jazz music with some more modern chicago house vibes.
All the tracks are 100% analog-produced, based on live construction and improvisation. For all the analog heads in the house, here’s some of the main hardware used during the recording sessions : Roland’s JP-08, JX-03 & TR8, Dave Instrument’s Mopho and one Nord Stage keyboard.
We’re hoping that you’re gonna enjoy this 4 joyfull and shiny jazz-house jams as much as we do !
Reflection opens up on Hancock Idea, a track driven by a laidback sax sample and a powerfull bouncy bassline. It was thought by Mangabey as a tribute to his main musical influences : Jazz Music, mixed with a modern house structure style. Perfect way to introduce this EP !
The second track Evening Joy is a 9min jam based on a warm bassline full of grooves, subtles vocal samples and tribal percussions. This joyful and effective progression leads to an epic Herbie Hancock inspired synth solo.
Reflection is the third and title track of the EP. It genuinely blends multiples funk and house vibes via a kind of cheap yet super addicitive synth sound - inspired by the work of Quincy Jones this time - combined with some Theo Parrish style drums.
On the last track Thelonious Dawn, Mangabey samples Thelonious Monk to provide this weird and catchy jam, based on a piano riff and some Mall Grab infused drums.

Sur Reflection Mangabey regroupe ses principales influences afin de créer son propre son, en mêlant mélodies et accords propres au jazz avec les codes d’une chicago house plus moderne.
Tous les morceaux sont produits analogiquement et basés sur une construction live laissant place à l’improvisation. Pour les aficionados de l’analo, voici quelques machines utilisées pendant les sessions d’enregistrement : JP-08, JX-03 et TR8 de chez Roland, le Mopho de Dave Instruments et un clavier Nord Stage.

Reflection s’ouvre sur Hancock’s Idea, morceau basé sur un sample de sax et une bassline solide et rebondie. Il a été pensé par Mangabey comme un hommage à son influence principale : le jazz, avec ce côté John Coltrane dans le saxo ainsi qu’Herbie Hancock à qui l’on doit le discours prononcé dans le break. Le track est construit autour d’une structure plus moderne, rappelant par exemple les productions de Dan Shake. L’introduction parfaite pour cet EP !
On retrouve sur le second morceau Evening Joy une ambiance plus chaude et festive, rythmée par des samples vocaux efficaces accompagnés de percussions tribales. La progression débouche sur un épique solo de synthé, encore une fois inspiré par Herbie Hancock.
Sur le troisième morceau Reflection, Mangabey met en avant les périodes disco et funk, avec une structure principalement axée sur un synthé cheap - inspiré par le travail de Quincy Jones - remis au goût du jour, récemment plébiscité par des artistes comme Palms Trax ou Jacob Korn.
Le dernier morceau Thelonious Dawn mélange un piano façon Thelonious Monk avec ce côté brut de la House, rappelant par exemple les récentes productions de Mall Grab.
